Mackenzie County is home to over 30 recreation areas, ranging from full facility campgrounds to day use areas. Wildlife is bountiful in the county. Moose is the most abundant big game,with caribou, deer and buffalo present. The County is situated at the confluence of the Peace and Central flyways, two of the major waterfowl flyways in North America. The communities of High Level, Fort Vermilion, La Crete, Rainbow Lake and Zama are home to a diverse background of citizens.
Rainbow Lake and Zama both developed as a result of major reserves of gas and oil. The hamlet of Zama, located in the middle of one of the largest known oil and gas fields in Alberta, is home to 250 residents as well as upwards of 4000 transient workers. The ‘small-town’ atmosphere offers security and safety to citizens and visitors alike. Zama boasts a full service campground with stocked fish pond, playground,horsesho pits and picnic areas.
