World's Largest Railroad Spike

Located on the banks of the Peace River bewteen Rycroft and Fairview, Dunvegan has been a popular stoping place and gathering location for over 2000 years, beginning with the Dene-Za, or Beaver People, and then for explorers, fur traders, pioneers and todays travellers and tourists.  Dunvegan is a multi-purpose location. The Dunvegan bridge, one of three crossing the Peace inAlberta, is the longest suspension bridge inAlberta and the fourth longest inCanada.  A historic settlement with guided tours andProvincialPark are nestled along the river bank just below the bridge.  The 64 stall campground has paved and landscaped walking trails leading to playground and picnic areas and massive u-pick gardens, greenhouses, mini golf and ice cream parlour.Hines Creek, just 40 km north of Dunvegan, is home to the World’s Largest Railroad Spike and the End of Steel Museum.  The Railroad Spike is accommpanied by a mini wooden train and telegraph line, while the Museum is home to a new taxidermy display featuring creatures of the Boreal forest and an authentic trapper’s cabin.

Figure Eight Lake,  55 km west of Hines Creek on Hwy 685, is an excellent fishing and canoeing lake with hiking trails, beach and playground and peaceful rustic camping.  For those wanting to boat or water ski instead of fish, Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, 4 km north and 6 km east of Grimshaw ( or follow signage from Hwy 685), offers beautiful paved trials and campground, boating lake, beach and playground / picnic area, birding trails and bird pond area with lookouts.
 Day two  Peace River and Northern Sunrise County

The Town of Peace River is located on the banks of thePeace River.  Famous lookout spots include the 12 FootDavis Memorial Site, and the Sagitawa Lookout, both over looking the town ofPeace River, thePeace RiverValley and the confluence of the Peace, Heart andSmokeyRivers.  The urban centre of the central Peace region,Peace River offers a great mix of hotels, restaurants, shopping and convenience.  The Peace River Museum, Archives & Mackenzie Centre staff can give you a run down of the history of the entire region, the fur trade era and the characters of the day, as well as a history of the Town of Peace River.  Check out the awesome displays, artwork and souvenier centre!
 Day three  Manning and County of Northern Lights

 Manning is home to the Manning Moose, a must do photo opportunity.  This one of a kind statue is located on the north end of main street and can’t be missed.  Manning’s greatest attraction is the Battle River Pioneer Museum, located at the south entrance to town, featuring a two headed calf, albino moose, wood buffalo, wolf and many other creatures of the northern forest in addition to a wonderful collection of antiques, tractors and farming equiptment and early fashions.
