Place Title: Manning Old Hospital MuseumPlace Description:
Step into the Manning Old Hospital Gallery and Museum and you will find yourself stepping back into 1947. Much of the hospital including the operating room and the men’s ward has been restored and furnished as it appeared in 1947. Early settlers in the Battle River Country had only public health nurses and saddle bag doctors to rely on for medical assistance. These brave individuals had to navigate their horse drawn transportation through winter blizzards and impassable roads. Then in 1937, with the help of the United Church Missionary Society, local volunteers were able to build the original eight bed Battle River Hospital. The hospital’s first surgery, an appendectomy was performed just three days after the hospital’s opening! Over 2000 babies were delivered within the walls of this hospital! Located on main street Manning, the Battle River Hospital remained in use until 1955 and was a key reason for the development of the Town of Manning in this area. Included in the museum is an arts and crafts gallery where you can enjoy the work of many local artists!
