Mackenzie Cairn
It was 1793 when Sir Alexander Mackenzie, famed North American explorer, overwintered at Fort Fork before starting his transcontinental journey to the Pacific. The Mackenzie Cairn, built in 1929, honours both the Fort Fork trading post and the place where Mackenzie’s important journey began. This National Historic Site also provides a wonderful view of the Peace River, and an information kiosk offers detailed maps, drawings of the fort and early photos. Historic tours are available during the summer months.
St. Augustine Mission Church
About 13 km southwest of the Town of Peace River, the St. Augustine Mission Church sits in a tranquil space in the valley. There are currently three great groomed trails in the Mighty Peace:
Wesley Creek Trail
Officially opened March 5, 2016 in conjunction with the Club’s first Poker Rally. This 30 km trail runs in a loop to the east and north of St. Isidore. The staging area can be accessed from Township Road 842 north of St. Isidore.
Leddy Lake Trail
Officially opened March 19, 2011. Located north of Peace River. Runs 40 km north from the Leddy Lake Recreation Area to the area of Driftwood Lake near Deadwood. The trail also includes a small loop near the Leddy Lake Recreation Area.
Smith Mills Trail
Officially opened March 11, 2017. The East End Staging Area is located to the north of Grimshaw and the West End Staging Area is located to the north of Hines Creek. Runs 60 kilometers from north of Figure Eight Lake to just east of Stony Lake. This trail includes a loop near the west end of the trail that has a magnificent view of the area.
Future Trails for the Mighty Peace:
Hines Creek
Work on this trail was formally initiated in the spring of 2015 and is currently in the final approval process. Final approval is expected to be in place shortly, hence if funding can be identified this trail could be developed during the winter of 2017/18. This 50 km trail would link the Smith Mills Trail with the Village of Hines Creek and in doing so, would be the first trail in the area offering sledders direct access to fuel, food, lodging and repair services similar to trails in Eastern Canada. Stay tuned for the opening date.
Cadotte River
As one of the original 3 trails identified by the Club and approved in principle in December of 2009 along with the Leddy Lake and Wesley Creek trails, further work has been delayed during the development of the Club’s other trails. This proposed trail would be an extension to the Wesley Creek Trail and will potentially run north along the power line which is adjacent to the DMI east haul road. Work could proceed once the Hines Creek Trail is complete if a Trail Sponsor to lead the project is identified.
Additional Trail Plans:
As part of the long range goal to complete a network of trails on both the east and west sides of the Peace River, there is also commitment to link our local network to those of other member Clubs of the Alberta Snowmobile Association as part of an overall network of trails within the Province of Alberta. From a conceptual perspective the Club has identified the potential of the following trails becoming part of the local trail network, Dixonville Connector & Talbot Lake Trail.

Place Title: Pure Instinct OutdoorsPlace Description:
Hunting is an age old tradition dating back to the beginning of time. The need to survive was not taught, it was learned. The landscape of hunting has evolved to mean more than survival today. The modern hunter is not fighting for survival from natures beasts and starvation, but rather fighting for the right to continue to take part in something that burns within them. We fight for the privilege to be able to conserve the land and animals that define what nature is all about. The lessons and values learned through this process make us better and heals us from the inside as we leave the world behind and enter into a wild and untamed place. We are drawn, even called to the outdoors by pure instinct.
Pure Instinct Outdoors is a group of passionate hunters from the Mighty Peace who capture their hunting adventures. Showing their ups and downs in every season. They are currently the top rated weekend show on Wild TV. Many of their episodes feature the Mighty Peace. The cast also hunts all over North America from grizzly bear Alaska to alligators in Louisiana.
Your Hosts
SCOTT BANACK
An outdoorsman his whole life, Scott spent much of his childhood hunting with family since a very tender age. Upon reaching High School, Scott was becoming a talented caller for Moose and was known for luring them as early as Grade 9. From these days of early morning spot and stalk Mulie hunts with his bow before school, to the recent pack hunts for days and weeks on end, he continues to stalk northern Alberta big game with his bow.
After connecting with numerous trophy animals, he started to challenge himself by filming his hunts, bringing this innate passion and wealth of hunting experience to Pure Instinct Outdoors.
Being a producer of the show and now father to 3 beautiful girls keeps him just as busy as the tree stand but he still finds a way to capture the best game every year and bring that amazing hunting experience to you in your home.
SCOTT BIGELOW
From Beaverlodge Alberta, Scott is known to have climbed more mountain tops and spent more nights under a spruce tree than just about anyone. Hunting all over Alberta as he grew up, he’s traveled across North America and the world while hunting many different species of game but always returns to his true passion of Elk and Sheep hunting in the Wilmore wilderness.
Currently based in central Alberta with his girlfriend Bailey and their collection of Horses, Dogs, Cats and possibly Yaks in the near future, Scott is following his life-long dream of hunting and harvesting game, bringing you great footage from the hunts that means the most to him.
DUSTIN BANACK
Scott’s brother Dustin was also raised in the family tradition of outdoor life. Starting so young that he can barely remember brief moments of situations in the bush with his dad and brother, he likes to say that “Hunting seasons don’t seem to have a start or a finish. We prepare for them all year round, from one open season to the next.”
His most vivid memory is harvesting his first Moose with his father. That experience taught him the value of the hard work required from tracking to harvest, the techniques and old-style teamwork which have grown to be as part of his day to day life.
“Hunting brings people together and keeps them together. I chose this route and look to pass on the enjoyment that I get from hunting to the others around me and those watching on WildTV. It’s creates a bond between young and old and everyone can enjoy.”
