The legendary 12 Foot Davis statue!

Henry Fuller Davis struck it rich in the mid-1800s on a 12 Foot gold claim in northern British Columbia, earning him around $12,000 as well as the “12 Foot Davis” nickname. Spending much of his life as a fur trader on the Peace River, he left his mark on many places in the region and was known for his good business sense and friendliness.

A wooden statue of 12 Foot Davis stands proudly in Riverfront Park,  located along the bank of the Peace River, downtown Peace River. The park is complimented by a children’s playground, gazebo, and a beautiful view of the Peace River. A paved walking trail connects the park to the Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre.

This large, two-part playground offers many choices of activities. Swing, jump, climb, dig and run to your hearts content. The Henderson play equipment, built in 2018, sits atop washed pea gravel. The junior play structure accommodates visitors of 18 months to 5 years. The senior play structure offers activities to impress the 5 to 12-yearolds. Check out the view and savor a picnic here at this park, there is plenty space to enjoy.

Athabasca Hall is home of the Peace Players Theatre Group, Athabasca Hall is a cultural centre in Peace River. This historic building hosts various performances and concerts throughout the year. Built in 1938 it is also a historical fixture. Peace Players host several productions every season from September to June, including a musical, a children’s production and the highly popular dinner theatre. Peace Players productions are held upstairs on the Don Weaver Stage, where there is fixed seating for 250 and a lounge and bar area for intermissions

Downstairs there is a sizeable Art Gallery and Dance Studio. The Athabasca Hall is ideal for musical productions, as well as small parties or special events. The capacity for the hall ranges from 114 people to 182 depending on the type of setup.

The Twelve Foot Davis Events Park is a hidden gem tucked away downtown, along the shores of the Heart River. This is a great location to roast hot dogs with a river valley view, toss a ball, have a romantic dinner and watch the sunset or simply for a picturesque walk. This is one of the best outdoor concert venues in the Mighty Peace. The shape of the hill surrounding the park makes a natural amphitheater it has made this location a prime choice for large events such as Peacefest a iconic annual music festival. 

This playground nestled in a cozy neighborhood setting will encourage neighbors and friends to enjoy the Romperland, Big Toys and Kompan play equipment. Built in 2005 on a pea gravel base, this playground has plenty of space to play games, run and even have a picnic. Children ages 2 –12 year of age will enjoy an outing to this inviting neighborhood park.

Try out the custom built Curtis Marshall Memorial Skate Park in the Town of Peace River. The park is located on the west side of 101 Street, between 101 Avenue and 102 Avenue in the Town of Peace River. The park features unique obstacles with lots of transition that gives this park a variety of features that is suitable for everyone’s skill level. The park is free and open to any skateboarders, BMX riders, push scooters and inline skaters. 

The Peace River Museum & Archives is located in the beautiful Peace River Valley. The museum cares for many objects, photographs and archival records that celebrate Peace River’s stories and history. The museum is a fun and a entertaining place of learning through objects in the museum’s collection as an entry-point to inquiry, discussion and exploration about the region. The archives offers an extensive archives and library for family and regional history research. Drop by for personal research or call for an appointment for more in-depth research.

The museum showcases temporary galleries throughout the year that enables a deeper look into many of the region’s more interesting and thought-provoking stories, individuals and objects.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie Gallery

This room tells the story of Sir Alexander Mackenzie and his journeys through the west.  Artifacts include archeological finds from Fort Fork, the 18^th century compound where Sir Alexander Mackenzie wintered while on his way to the Pacific coast.  The display also talks about the fur trade in western Canada, with examples of the types of furs trapped in the area, replica of a fur trader’s canoe and an authentic fur press.

This gallery is home to our temporary exhibits.  These include local history as well as travelling exhibits from other museums.   New and topical displays are planned out each year to fill this space.

Peace River Gallery

The Town of Peace River has a wonderfully diverse past, and we showcase parts of this past in the Peace River Gallery.  From early firefighters and police to those first pioneers who settled the land, we aim to represent the many facets of life in the Town of Peace River.  Starting with prehistoric history and going into the present day, we examine the Town and the people who call it home.

Climbing is the name of the game at this playground. The Xccent Play Large Cayton climber unit structure was installed in 2012 on a protective sand surface. Enjoy the beautiful view here on one of the handy benches or bring a picnic and stay a while.

Overlooking the Peace River valley from the west bank these diamonds are a unique place to play baseball. The Town of Peace River has a lively sports community with many community facilities that are not limited to locals. Keep the athletes in your family happy and plan a day of fun down at the Ken Horneland Memorial Ball Diamonds. There is a cluster of four diamonds that offer a great space for tournaments, with easy highway access and amenities nearby. The diamonds are impeccably maintained with lush grass. The grassed areas surrounding the diamonds are great for family picnics and strolling while enjoying the sunshine.

A great day of fun is in store for visitors to the Spray Park and playground. Bring a swim suit, towel and a picnic. After an awesome play on the Little Tikes play equipment, cool off in the spray park. Re-energize with a snack and do it all over again.

Lots of trees, open space and fresh air are ready for visitors to enjoy at the Kinsmen Funland Playground. The Blue Imp play equipment was installed in 2013 on a protective surface of pea graveland offers a variety of play choices for kids ages 2 to 12 years.

The historic Peace River NAR Station, last of its kind in northern Alberta.

The NAR Station was built in 1916, a Class C Station, it is the last of its kind in Northern Alberta. The station was restored in 1988, and declared a Provincial Historic Resource Site on April 29, 1988. It now serves as the Town of Peace River’s Visitor Information Centre. The ground floor has been furnished to the 1920s-1930s era, and upstairs features local art. Events are held at the station throughout the summer and autumn.

From Highway 2 (Edmonton or Fairview/Grimshaw):

Exit the highway at 100 Street (Hwy 744), and head south under the railway trestle. At the traffic circle, take the first exit (the first right); the street that leads between the Sawridge Hotel and the KFC. Follow this street until you see the NAR Station, which is a two-storey red wooden building. There is adequate parking on site.

From Highway 744 (north from Girouxville):

When you’ve made it to the bottom of Judah hill at the junction of 104^th Avenue and 101 Street turn right. Follow this street (101 Street) north until you reach the T junction (the Fire Hall with a tower will be facing you). Turn left, and at the set of lights turn right. Follow this street to the traffic circle. Enter the traffic circle and take the third exit; the street that leads between the Sawridge Hotel and the KFC. Follow this street until you see the NAR Station, which is a two-storey red wooden building. There is adequate parking on site.

Accessibility:

The NAR Station does have a ramp onto the station platform, however we do not have accessible washrooms. Because we are an historic building, our doorways may be too narrow for some wheel chairs.

Race, leap, laugh and play at the Baldwin Court Playground. The Play World System installed in 2000 on a pea gravel base offers many appealing choices to kids of 5 to 12 years of age.
