Whispering Pines Ski Hill is Northern Alberta’s Best Kept Secret! 

Whispering Pines Ski Hill is considered one of Northern Alberta’s premier hills —for good reason.  A short, scenic 200-kilometre drive from Grande Prairie, this ski hill offers exceptional hospitality, impeccable maintained runs and dramatic scenery. There are 17 runs, 3 chair lifts, a terrain park, rental shop and ski school.  The wide variety of terrain provides excellent skiing and snowboarding for all skill levels. Take a break in-between riding and warm up in their day lodge and enjoy a delicious hot meal. Or sit in the upper chalet and and enjoy a picturesque view of the ski hill.  Whatever you do make sure you get your hands on one of their epic cinnamon buns. Visitors travel far and wide to get their hands on these cinnamon buns. Keep an eye out while on the hill for local wildlife friends crossing the coniferous tree-bordered runs. It’s not unusual to come across a deer, moose or even a fox. 

Are you a cross-country skier? 

Whispering Pines Ski Hill has an abundance of cross-country ski trails which are free for visitors to use, leading from the ski hill.

This unique multiplex in the Town of Grimshaw, offers something for everyone!  Get active and go for a walk, jog or run on the 175.3 metre elevated running track. Then stop in at the well- equipped weight room for a work out.  The spacious field house is perfect for special events like weddings, concerts and trade shows. From fall to spring, the ice surface in the arena is busy with hockey, figure skating and family skate time.  The sizable and comfortable bleacher area offers the perfect spot to cheer on your favourite skater!  Enjoy the summer sun and take a dip in the outdoor pool which is right next door to the multiplex. Drop in to the Visitor Information Centre conveniently located in the multiplex and plan your next adventure!  Hungry after all this activity?  Drop in to the onsite concession for some homemade goodness!

Misery Mountain Ski Area is located in Peace River, Alberta. A short 486 km north-west of Edmonton and 195 km north-east of Grande Prairie. Visitors flock here to enjoy the best downhill sports and to experience one of Alberta’s sunniest regions. Misery Mountain Ski Area offers the most vertical descent in northern Alberta. With two t-bars, quad chairlift, 26 runs, snowshoe trails, a terrain park and the Mighty Peace’s most extensive snowmaking system. Misery Mountain Ski Area is the Mighty Peace’s playground, right here in your backyard. 

Misery Mountain Ski Area offers a picturesque view of the Peace River Valley. They offer a family friendly atmosphere with a cozy chalet with a concession. Make sure you try their iconic poutine, because it doesn’t get more Canadian than that! Located right in the town of Peace River – making it easy to enjoy the other amenities that Peace River has to offer when you are done riding for the day. Lessons are available along with full rental gear and snowshoe rentals. Keep an eye on their social media channels for upcoming events throughout the year.

Take a short drive southwest of Fairview to discover the Fairview Ski Hill with its beautiful views of the Hines Creek coulee. Say goodbye to lift lines and hello to 100% natural snow, Fairview Ski Hill is the perfect place to bring your family to play this winter. With 20,000ft of groomed runs, 4 lifts (beginner to expert) and a diverse terrain park, there is plenty of skiing and snowboarding for everyone to enjoy. The Fairview ski hill is equipped with the best rental selection in the region, a full concession and a great view of the hill from the comfort of the chalet. Don’t forget to book lessons for beginners and check out the special events running throughout the winter season. Check out the Fairview Ski Hill on weekends or Wednesday and Thursday nights for night skiing!

The Fairview Fairplex Arena is home to the WJHL Fairview Flyers, Fairview Minor Hockey Teams, and the Fairview Silver Blades Skating Program. Family and public skating hours are also available. Located directly south of the Fairplex is an outdoor ice surface which is perfect for a casual pick-up game of shinny, or an afternoon skate with the family.

The Fairplex is located just one block off of Fairview’s Main Street at 10317 109th Street, very convenient for shopping and exploring town!

Hockey is part of the Canadian culture in Canada and the sport is part of our national identity.

The Baytex Energy Centre is the premiere recreation facility in the Peace River Region offering a wide variety of sports and fitness options. An indoor fieldhouse and running track offers year-round access to field sports, there is also an ice rink, indoor children’s playground, fitness centre, concession stand, and community rooms.

Smith Mills Trail 

Officially opened March 11, 2017. The East End Staging Area is located to the north of Grimshaw and the West End Staging Area is located to the north of Hines Creek.  Runs 60 kilometers from north of Figure Eight Lake to just east of Stony Lake.  This trail includes a loop near the west end of the trail that has a magnificent view of the area.

Cadotte River

As one of the original 3 trails identified by the Club and approved in principle in December of 2009 along with the Leddy Lake and Wesley Creek trails, further work has been delayed during the development of the Club’s other trails.  This proposed trail would be an extension to the Wesley Creek Trail and will potentially run north along the power line which is adjacent to the DMI east haul road.  Work could proceed once the Hines Creek Trail is complete if a Trail Sponsor to lead the project is identified.

An outdoor game of shinny is a great way to enjoy a sunny winter day. This is a free, first come first serve rink for all ages to enjoy. Check out the Mainway Electrical outdoor rink in Grimshaw, located on the north side of the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex at 4609 50thStreet in the Town of Grimshaw.

Enjoy the winter season in the Peace Region. Grab some skates and head out to one of the six outdoor neighbourhood ice rinks that the Town of Peace River operates.
