Motorcycling in the Mighty Peace

Bruce Barclay and his son, Darian Armstrong, are passionate motorcyclists who enjoy exploring the Mighty Peace on two wheels and feeling the open air around them.

Both Bruce and Darian are long-time residents of the Peace Region and have been motorcycle owners for most of their lives. With their wealth of knowledge with these dynamic machines, they aim to educate and motivate others who are intrigued by the idea of cruising on a motorcycle and discovering the region from a fresh perspective.

When planning a day trip out on your motorcycle, there are many factors to consider. Taking the time to plan ahead can save you stress later on, and Bruce has a quick checklist for those new to hitting the pavement on a motorcycle.

“Always check the weather, road conditions, possible construction zones, and cell phone coverage,” said Bruce. “Another thing to consider is whether you can complete your trip on one tank of gas. If you can’t, then it’s best to google fuel sources along your route.”

Adding to these safety measures, Darian also suggests packing a phone charger, protein bars, a folding saw, first aid kit, and rain gear for any trip out, no matter your experience level.

Being a new motorcycle owner can be overwhelming, but for those just starting out, it’s key to take your time prior to each trip and take the necessary precautions before setting out on the open road.

“It’s important to double check your insurance and registration paperwork before leaving and checking all the routine things on your bike such as tire pressures, oil level, chain adjustment, and lights,” said Bruce. “And always make sure someone knows your anticipated time of return.”

Once you’re ready to take off and enjoy the beauty of the Mighty Peace, there are plenty of routes and areas that offer scenic views and great pitstops.

Bruce’s preferred route is a loop from Fairview to Rycroft, then along the Shaftsbury Trail, continuing to Peace River, Grimshaw, and finally back to Fairview.

Following this route allows riders to hit hot spots such as the iconic Dunvegan Historical Park and Bridge, the Shaftsbury Ferry, and the picturesque Shaftsbury Trail that has stops along the way such as Fort Fork, the Mackenzie Cairn, and Strong Creek Park.

Riders will also have the opportunity to grab a meal or refreshing drink at Board N’ Barrel in Peace River, the Krooked House in Grimshaw, or the Heilan Beer House in Fairview.

Travelling throughout the Mighty Peace on a motorcycle is a one-of-a-kind experience that everyone should enjoy at least once in their lives. According to Darian, there are plenty of reasons to get out and explore the region this summer.

“What I love most about the area is that there is plenty of wilderness to see, lower volumes of traffic, and long summer hours that allow you to extend your trip later into the day,” said Darian. “Plus, there’s endless backroads to enjoy for those with dual sport motorcycles.”

While cruising through the scenic highways in the area, there are still many things to be aware of to ensure you have a safe and unproblematic ride. Wildlife can either make or break your trip and it’s best to be on the lookout for four legged creatures crossing your path.

“Moose are large, and their eyes don’t glow in the dark, making them hard to spot at night,” said Bruce. “Slow down at night and get a professional to help you add more lighting to your bike – you don’t want to overload your electrical system or else you will get a chance to meet new people on the side of the road!”

If you’re new to the motorcycle world and want to get into it, both Bruce and Darian have solid advice to make it easier and hassle free.

“It’s important to choose the right bike for your anticipated riding style. A dual sport model can do it all,” said Bruce. “Always make sure the bike fits you. If you’re standing on your tippy toes when it’s stopped, you’re going to have trouble maneuvering it.”

According to Darian, the best way to get into the industry is to simply talk about it.

“Visit a dealership, find an enthusiastic die hard and pick their brain. All motorcycle people love to talk about bikes!” said Darian.

If you’re considering a trip this summer, Bruce has some simple tips to ensure you get the most out of your upcoming adventures.

“Have fun! Don’t attempt to keep up with faster and more experienced riders,” said Bruce. “If you think you’re going too fast, you’re almost always correct.”

Owning a motorcycle can open a whole new world for most and using one to see the Mighty Peace is a great way to get outdoors, experience what the area has to offer, and create new memories.
