Race History & World Jet Boat Championships

Image

The origins of jet boat racing can be traced back to New Zealand in the 1950s. It was there that Bill Hamilton developed the first jet boat, which used a water jet propulsion system instead of a traditional propeller. Hamilton's invention was a game-changer for the boating world, as it allowed boats to navigate shallow waters and rapids that would be impossible for propeller-driven boats to traverse.

In the early days, jet boats were primarily used for commercial purposes, such as ferrying passengers and cargo up and down New Zealand's rivers. However, it wasn't long before thrill-seekers began to see the potential for these powerful machines to be used for racing. The first jet boat races were held in New Zealand in the 1960s, and the sport quickly gained popularity.

Jet boat racing continues to attract fans and competitors from around the world. The first world Jet boat race was held in Canada in 1978. From its humble beginnings in New Zealand to its status as a global phenomenon, the sport has come a long way over the last several decades. Whether you're a seasoned racer or a newcomer to the sport, there's no denying the thrill and excitement of jet boat racing.
