Trinidy Schmidt, Community Services Coordinator for the County of Northern Lights Economic Development and Community Services department, has been a local to the County of Northern Lights for most of her life.
Born and raised in the area, Trinidy quickly fell in love with rural living and the quietness that came with it all. Now, she takes pleasure in living on an acreage and being close to nature.
“I really enjoy a “slower” life here. Being immersed in nature is one of the best things to experience,” said Trinidy. “I understand the appeal of the amenities that living in larger urban centres or even rural small towns bring, but I’m happy to sacrifice those for life in a rural area.”
Having a close connection to the region came easily for Trinidy and one of her favourite things to do is to share its natural wonders with others.
“When family or friends from urban areas visit, I love to watch their reactions when they see the northern lights or the abundance of wildlife here,” said Trinidy.
Summer is one of her favourite seasons in the County, and Trinidy can often be found enjoying a wide variety of outdoor activities. Whether it’s gathering around a campfire with loved ones, picking wild blueberries, taking leisurely walks, or simply unwinding in a hammock with a good book, Trinidy values the variety that the area has to offer.
“When we’re feeling adventurous, my husband and I spend a lot of time jet boating on the Peace River,” said Trinidy. “We often venture upstream, float, and sometimes explore the shore to search for interesting rocks and driftwood.”
Trinidy has also taken up kayaking, which allows her to fully take in her surroundings and enjoy a more leisurely pace.
“While paddling on the river I often spot things I didn’t noticed before. It’s fun to experience the Peace on a different mode of transportation,” said Trinidy.
Spending time outdoors is great, but Trinidy suggests brushing up on wilderness safety skills before heading out, taking all garbage back out and ensure the land you’re adventuring on is public, not private property.
“Visitors, and locals, should always brush up on being bear smart, ensure they are aware of any fire bans and restrictions, and make sure someone knows their intended plans if they’re hitting the river or trails,” said Trinidy. “I always tell everyone to be safe, be smart, and to have fun!”
When it comes to staying in the County, Trinidy suggests camping at the Notikewin Provincial Park for those who love adventuring outdoors and camping under the stars.
“The Notikewin Park is a gorgeous off-grid camping spot. It’s a bit of a trek and doesn’t have powered sites, but it is 110% worth it,” said Trinidy. “You are surrounded by ferns and massive birch trees, plus, you can take a short walk to where the Notikewin and Peace River meet.”
If you’re wanting a more home away from home stay, Trinidy recommends booking at the Sunny Valley Adventure Lodge, which sleeps 15, has serviced camping stalls, and is close to the Peace River.
“It is a stunning lodge in an equally stunning location. It is the perfect gathering spot for small family or friend gatherings, and special celebrations,” said Trinidy. “Plus, the amenities are great – there’s a hot tub, pool table, and commercial kitchen.”
For those visiting the County and needing a place to fuel up on food and beverages, Trinidy suggests a local favourite to curb your appetite and satisfy any craving. “Grimm’s Truck Stop offers some nice classic diner fare where trax fries poutine is a must,” said Trinidy.
Trinidy believes everyone should visit the County of Northern Lights at least once and see its beauty up close. Whether you’re looking for an exhilarating weekend getaway or a place to rest and relax, the County is bound to leave you feeling rejuvenated.
“Anyone looking to slow down and shed the weight of a busy life, even for a week or weekend, will appreciate the serenity and beauty of the County,” said Trinidy. “There is a lot of history and land to be explored and discovered here, and to me, that is pretty darn exciting.”
