Alberta Pond Hockey Championships

Organized by Alberta Pond Hockey Association

There’s nothing like a good old hockey game, but nothing compares to the Alberta Pond Hockey Championships – one of Canada’s largest pond hockey events happening right here in the Mighty Peace.

Just Imagine; fifteen ice rinks side by side on a natural lake in a stunning park area with the sounds of skates carving the ice, spectators cheering and music.  This high-spirited three-day event is more than a celebration of hockey; it’s basically a winter wonderland of activities for all ages to enjoy. Ice Sculptures, helicopter rides, motorcycle and ATV racing, delicious food and drink, music, beer gardens, and a Gala celebration on Saturday night are some things visitors can expect at the 2023 Alberta Pond Hockey Championships.

Teams travel from across Canada, and the world, to enjoy a weekend playing the beloved sport of choice of Canadians – old-school style. After all, hockey was born and raised on the frozen ponds, lakes, dugouts and rivers of Canada, and this event encapsulates the nostalgia from back in time with no blue or red lines or face-off circles – just fun and the love of the game played in the open crisp air.

This tournament truly is for everyone, with various divisions that teams can register for. Junior, recreational, old timers, women’s, and for all the ringette players out there – there’s a tournament lined up for you on Sunday. For teams looking for some serious competition, they can register for the competitive divisions that come with a cash prize, and of course, the championship team gets to hold up the treasured cup. Registration is $500 for adult teams and free for junior teams – go to for more information and to register.

The event opens on Friday, March 10th, in the afternoon, with opening ceremonies and the start of the adult hockey matches. Games continue Saturday, plus the much anticipated “Studs on Ice” Motorcycle and ATV racing and the Gala event (at the Multiplex in Grimshaw) that starts around 6:30 pm with dinner, dancing, and a lot of fun for all. Sunday includes playoffs, junior hockey, ringette, a shootout for juniors, consolation final, championships game, and the closing ceremonies that take place mid to late afternoon.

So mark March 10, 11, and 12, 2023, on your calendar; you will not want to miss it.
