1. Snowshoeing

Dixonville Community Trail
Located in the hamlet of Dixonville, this enchanting 1.5 km trail is a snowshoer’s dream. This interactive trail offers tons to see and learn around every turn with tons of birdhouses, feeders and information posted about the abundant flora and fauna in the area. The majority of the trail is groomed and maintained by passionate community volunteers, and they even keep birdseed on site so visitors can help make sure the birds are well fed in the winter months.

2. Ice-fishing

Twin Lakes
Twin Lakes is the perfect place to throw in your hook for a day of great ice fishing. Bring your grill and enjoy a winter picnic with your fresh and tasty Rainbow Trout catch. They also have a scenic 3 km trail that is perfect for snowshoeing. Located 65 km north of Manning on Highway 35

Figure Eight Lake
If you are looking for a great place to spend a wintry day, look no further. This great little lake is a popular destination for locals and visitors for a relaxing day of ice fishing. Rainbow Trout is the day’s catch at this cozy little lake surrounded by an excellent snowshoe or cross-country ski trail. Located eight km north of Grimshaw, then 20 km west on Highway 737.

3. Skiing and snowboarding

Manning Ski Hill
This great family-friendly ski hill offers gorgeous views with five main runs, and some bush runs for the more adventurous pow lovers. Regardless of if you are new to the sport or an experienced rider, there is something for everyone at the Manning Ski Hill. Open Saturday and Sunday from 11-4 pm and Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Take Highway 690 east to Range Road 224 North and travel north to the end of the road.

4. Sledding

Mighty Peace Snowmobile Association
The County of Northern Lights is the perfect place to visit if you love snowmobiling. Be sure to check out the Osmand/Get Away Cabins/Leddy Lake Trail that runs 40 km north from the leddy Lake Recreation Area north to Driftwood lake by Deadwood, or the Smith Mills Trail, that runs through the County Of Northern Lights 60 km from the Figure Eight Lake to the Stoney Lake area near the Village of Hines Creek. Both of these gorgeous trails are maintained and groomed by Peace Valley Snow Riders Association members and volunteers. Check out their website for trail maps.

5. Northern Lights

Gazing up and taking in the Aurora Borealis, fondly known as the “Northern Lights,” is an experience that most people can only dream about. But the County of Northern Lights has plenty of dark sky viewing areas to enjoy the northern lights on a clear winter’s night. No matter how many times they’ve done their mystical dance across the sky, their magic never ceases to amaze viewers.
