Enjoying the Warmer Side of Winter

We get it, you can’t spend all your time outside. Sometimes you just need to strip those outer layers and enjoy the warmer side of winter. From indoor pools and sports to theatres and date ideas, there’s plenty to keep you busy over winter in the Mighty Peace region.

Mighty Museums

The Fairview Fine Arts Centre offers plenty of classes, from painting to pottery, and memberships so that you can utilize the space for your own work. This is also a great place to stop in and shop if you’re looking for locally made gifts. There’s UFO (unfinished objects) meetings on alternating Sundays, where you can bring in drawings, knitting, clothing – anything! You also can’t forget about their annual Mexican themed chili cook off event, which is complete with local craft beer.

Since 1967, the Peace River Museum, Archives & Mackenzie Centre has worked hard to tell the story of the fur trade and how the settlement of Peace River turned into the town it is today. The exhibit in the Main Gallery changes every eight months, so you won’t see the same displays every time you visit. Their interpretive walking tours are perfect for learning the history and culture of the Mighty Peace area.

The St. Isidore Museum & Cultural Centre offers a narration of the francophone community from Québec with costumes, pictures, artifacts, and a train car replica to help you visualize the trek the families had to make with their livestock.

Story & Cinema

Have you been to the library lately? Nowadays, they’re used for way more than renting books. The Peace River Municipal Library has public computers, free Wifi, two language learning platforms, meeting spots, and a room for rent. If you’re not from Peace River, that’s okay! If you sign up for a TAL card, you can borrow books from over 300 public, post-secondary, or government special libraries, and return them to any participating library. Best of all, it’s completely free to register!

Peace River’s River City Cinema is an old fashioned cinema that has recently been renovated to accommodate four screens. It runs movies currently in theatres, and there’s a discount night on Tuesdays, with all tickets being 6$.

Keep Fit & Eat It

There’s no better way to keep warm than by working your muscles. The Mile Zero Multiplex  and Al Adair Rec Centre offer sports, running tracks, and weight lifting. But going to the gym can be a pain, we know. So get delivery! No, seriously. Fitness on the Go will bring all the fitness equipment right to your front door, and all they need is an hour of your time.

After you work up a sweat, check out one of the many restaurants in the area.  J’s Java Domain is hands down the best place for coffee in Peace River. Their hot meals of soup and sandwiches will keep you warm on a cold winter day.

Mighty Peace is an amazing place to spend your winter, but that doesn’t mean you have to be out in the snow the whole time. We hope to see you here!
