1. Wilderness Park

If you want to feel like you’re in the middle of an enchanted forest and spend a day outside in fresh air, then Wilderness Park is for you! As soon as you enter you will be met with sunshine filtering through the towering trees, plenty of paths and trails to follow and the lovely sound of birds singing all around you. Wilderness Park has two large man-made ponds that have crystal clear water and plenty of fish to catch. Pack your fishing gear and make yourself comfortable on one of the many docks that are available. There are picnic tables, fire pits and immaculate outhouses, so you can pack a lunch and enjoy an entire afternoon outside. You’re guaranteed to love this place after just one visit!

2. Lac Cardinal Recreation Area

Experience the beauty of Lac Cardinal while camping at the Lac Cardinal Recreation Area, nestled on the eastern shore of the lake adjacent to Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park. Just 5 miles northwest of Grimshaw, reach the recreation area by taking Township Road 833A off Highway 35 to the 16-site campground. For just $10 per day, enjoy amenities such as fire pits, a playground, and a camp kitchen. Please note, there are no hookups or showers available. The campground is ideally situated for a variety of activities. Spend your days paddle boarding, canoeing, or kayaking on the lake, and take advantage of the nearby boat launch for tubing or water skiing. Explore the Lac Cardinal Pioneer Village Museum and the rodeo grounds, which are just a short walk away. The North Peace Stampede, held annually at the rodeo grounds, offers a fun summer event!

Additionally, a large hall is available for rent from the municipality, perfect for family reunions or special events. Enjoy all that this fantastic location has to offer!

3. Strong Creek Park

Discover the charm of Strong Creek Park, a versatile municipal park located at the mouth of Strong Creek on the Peace River, just 8 km south of Peace River, Alberta, along Shaftesbury Trail. Whether you’re setting up camp or planning a day trip, this park has something for everyone. Enjoy rustic camping spots at just $10 per night. The amenities include washrooms, drinking water, and a sheltered kitchen to enhance your stay. The park is conveniently located a short walk from the Peace River, where you can spend your time sunbathing, paddling, or fishing. For day visitors, there are picnic tables and a fantastic play area for kids, along with scenic hiking trails that wind through the park. It’s the ideal spot to relax and escape from daily life.

4. Lac Cardinal Pioneer Village Museum

Sitting next to Queen Elizabeth Park, this pioneer village will take you back in time and provide the whole family with a fun and educational experience! This is the perfect opportunity to get a first hand look at how the pioneers lived throughout the 1920’s until the 1940’s. With fully furnished houses, a school, blacksmith shop, general store, fire hall, municipal office, carpenter shop, church, barn and library, this is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and bask in history. 5. Shaftesbury Trail

The Shaftesbury Trail, running 26 kilometers alongside the Peace River, is one of the region’s most scenic drives. Once a route for First Nations and Métis fur traders, it features key historic sites like Fort Fork, the MacKenzie Cairn, and St. Augustine’s Mission. Start your trip from Grimshaw via Highway 2 and Secondary Highway 684, or from Peace River by taking Highway 684 west of the Peace River bridge. Enjoy a picnic at Strong Creek Park, visit Shaftesbury Gardens, and end with a ride on the Shaftesbury Ferry for stunning river and hillside views.
