1. Dog Sledding

Taking a dog sled ride would typically be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but not in the MD of Peace 135. Whirlwind Acres, located just outside of Berwyn, offers dog sled tours led by purebred Siberian Huskies. These incredible and friendly animals will have you smiling from ear to ear, and this is one of those experiences you do not forget. Whirlwind Acres also offers top-quality boarding services with a clean and welcoming dog kennel available; it is a home away from home for visiting canines.

2. Unique Stays

Wildrose Guest House

Overlooking the Peace River Valley, the Wildrose Guest House offers stunning views and luxury living only 8 minutes from Peace River. This incredible guest house is perfect for both business and personal trips. Rooms can be rented individually or the entire house. It is commonly rented for business travellers, work retreats, meetings, private parties, weddings or family gatherings. Regardless of the nature of your trip, be sure to relax in the massive outdoor hot tub surrounded by the gorgeous Peace River valley, or maybe shoot a game of pool in the recreation room – there’s something for everyone here. If you want to get work-out in during your visit, there’s a treadmill and elliptical machine, and a massive outdoor space perfect for a walk or snowshoe.

The Rise AirBNB

This place is truly a gem – The Rise AirBNB cabins are situated on 200 acres of farmland at the top of a gorgeous river valley displaying stunning 360 views of the vast prairie skies. Providing a mostly off-the-grid experience, the Rise AirBNB guests will go back to the simple things in life like wood-burning stoves, outhouses and solar panel power. There are two fully outfitted and beautifully decorated main cabins and a communal cookhouse. Be sure to take the snowshoes or toboggan (provided) out for some winter fun – there’s tons of space to enjoy. Laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, towel paper, coffee, and tea will be replenished for long-term guests.

3. Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

Wilderness Park

Located just between Peace River and Grimshaw, Wilderness Park is the perfect place for a snowshoe or cross-country ski. This gorgeous area is nestled in the forest with tons of trails and room to roam and explore. Spotting animal tracks in the snow, deer foraging for food, and the abundance of curious birds are just some of nature’s delights you will take in at Wilderness Park.

Lac Cardinal Recreation Area

Strap on your snowshoes or skis and head out to Lac Cardinal Recreation Area for some winter magic. There’s so much to explore here, with lots of ungroomed trails headed in every direction. Take the trail east in the forest to the bird watch area, or head to the west to the lake to take in its’ vastness – you will be recharged after spending time here. Lac Cardinal is also home to the annual Alberta Pond Hockey Championships and is located about 3 km north and 5 km west of the Town of Grimshaw.

4. Helicopter Tours

What does the Peace Country look like from the air? Find out with a thrilling helicopter tour with Black Swan Helicopters. You will be in awe of the beauty of the valley and the rich landscapes of the Peace region with 360-degree views. Guests can request to fly over specific areas or choose the awe-inspiring Smoky River Tour, where passengers get up-close views of the Smoky River and the surrounding region. Tours are available all year round and cost $500 for a half-hour (with a maximum of 4 passengers). In addition to providing tour services in the region, the company transports firefighters, cargo and equipment to fire sites and provides essential support to extinguish fires and limit fire expansion. Black Swan Helicopters is located in Berwyn and also transports visiting biologists performing research in the area.

5. Experience the Northern Lights

Gazing up and taking in the Aurora Borealis, fondly known as the “Northern Lights,” is an experience that most people can only dream about. But the MD of Peace 135 has plenty of dark sky viewing areas to enjoy the northern lights on a clear winter’s night. No matter how many times they’ve done their mystical dance across the sky, their magic never ceases to amaze viewers.
