Well treed, private camping sites near the shore of Montagneuse Lake within the Stoney Lake Recreational area are available to visitors looking to get away from it all and enjoy some nature! This is a user-maintained campground with firepits and picnic tables available. The calm clear lake provides opportunities to swim, paddle board, canoe or kayak! Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line from the pier or their non motorized boat! There is a boat launch available. There is something for everyone to enjoy in this beautiful and remote area. Many different species of birds and wild animals can be enjoyed while hiking or mountain biking the area trails. Don’t forget you can also enjoy a crisp clear winter day by going ice fishing on the lake or doing some snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the ungroomed trails.
Stoney Lake Recreation Area is a scenic drive 50km North of Fairview or 20km North of Hines Creek. The campground is open mid May to mid September.

Pack a winter picnic and enjoy a gorgeous winter day ice fishing on Stoney Lake! Not a fishing enthusiast? No problem! Grab your snowshoes and head out on the unmaintained trails around this scenic frozen lake. Northwest Alberta’s sunny winter days make it easy for visitors to get outside and enjoy a day of fresh air and sparkling snowy scenery. End your day with a warm beverage by a crackling hot campfire. This is a perfect dark sky area to do some star gazing and if you’re lucky, the northern lights just might put on a show for you! Be prepared for access roads and parking lots to be cleared of snow sporadically.Â
Get There: Stoney Lake is approximately 50 km north of Fairview on Highway 64.

Both campgrounds are well equipped with camp kitchens, outhouses, fire pits, picnic tables and playgrounds. Try your luck at a game of horseshoes and when you’re ready to relax, there’s lots of fire wood available for a long enjoyable campfire in the evening! Many of the campsites offer a river view that will take your breath away.  The Carters Camp campground area is where the Montagneuse River empties into the Peace River. This makes for many interesting areas to hike and explore. Campers can enjoy playing in the water and also try their hand at fishing! Keep your eyes open for wildlife along the river and high on the banks. Â
