Hines Creek is a small community with a big heart. It’s the type of place where everyone knows everyone and strangers passing through are only friends the locals haven’t met yet. Stay at one of the many scenic campgrounds in the area to enjoy the great outdoors, discover the hospitality and amenities at the local hotel or hidden treasure of a bed-and-breakfast, and enjoy good home-cooked meals at the golf course clubhouse or the Hines Creek Hotel restaurant. - Hines Creek Golf & Country Club – Perfect for the golfing family, this 9-hole course just eight minutes south of Hines Creek has grass greens and easy access to an ATV trail system into the Sand Hills. The clubhouse restaurant is a great place to grab your favourite comfort food dishes like pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and more.
- George Lake Campground – This beautiful camping spot is only a few minutes south of Hines Creek. Ideal for boating, waterskiing, picnicking, and relaxing, but not fishing—the lake is too shallow for fish to survive the winter. For fishing, check out Stoney Lake (below). If you’re there on the Labour Day weekend in September, check out the George Lake Music Festival.
- Carter’s Camp – Camp on the Peace River only 25 km (27 minutes) west of Hines Creek. Terrific for fishermen, hikers, boaters, and families. There’s a kitchen shelter for groups to take advantage of the great outdoors, plus hiking trails through the gorgeous Peace River hills.
- Many Islands Campground – Gorgeous campground about 36 minutes west of Hines Creek, just south of Highway 64. Enjoy hiking trails, hookups, and horseshoes in the rolling hills of the Peace River Valley. Check out the Many Islands Music Festival if you’re here on the third weekend of July.
- Stoney Lake Provincial Park Campground – Experience true rustic camping in this user-maintained, unserviced campground on the shores of Montagneuse Lake 20 km north of Hines Creek. Explore the lake and fish from your kayak or powerboat, and keep your eyes peeled for birds and wildlife.
- Sulphur Lake Campground – This small unserviced campground is perfect for a weekend getaway into nature. Fantastic for fishing, birding, canoeing, and swimming. Bring your own drinking water and firewood.

- Hines Creek Hotel – Located at the heart of Hines Creek, this hotel, bar, and restaurant is more than the local watering hole—it’s a community hotspot. If you want to stay in a historical building with easy access to all that Hines Creek has to offer, this place is for you. The restaurant is an excellent place to get delicious home-cooked food in a friendly atmosphere. The bar frequently brings in local bands on Saturday nights and hosts Sunday afternoon jam sessions, so if you hit it right, you might even get some live music with your meal.
What to Do:
Hines Creek offers plenty of activities to explore. Walk through history at the End of Steel Museum (so called because the community used to lie at the northern extent of the railroad). Cool off on hot days at the spray park or take the kids to the playground. Fish or boat at any of the nearby lakes or rivers (see the campgrounds above for ideas). Get a photo with the giant grain elevator—one of the few remaining in Alberta.
This tight-knit community frequently puts on social events at the Dave Shaw Memorial Complex. Check the Hines Creek & District Agricultural Society’s Facebook page or call the town office to see what’s happening during your visit. Head out to the Hines Creek Golf Course for lunch and to play a few rounds.
If music is your thing, check out the Many Islands Music Festival on the third weekend of July and the George Lake Music Festival on Labour Day Sunday. Each event has its own unique flavour, but both are fabulous entertainment events for kids and adults alike.
Be sure to stop in at the farmers market on Saturdays (held at the museum) to take home some excellent and unique local fare, such as Peace Gourmet Honey flower-specific honey and more.
