Historic Dunvegan is a provincially and nationally designated historic resource. Experience history through 4 original, authentically restored and furnished buildings and the stories of Indigenous, fur trade, and mission life that our historic interpreters are waiting to share with you. Located alongside the Peace River with a breathtaking view of Alberta’s longest vehicle suspension bridge, there are activities for the whole family! A visitors’ centre located near the entrance offers information as well as guided tours of the historic buildings. The Visitor Centre and historic buildings are open from May 18 through Labour Day, 10am-5pm Wednesday through Sunday and holiday Mondays. Admission fees apply.

Other nearby amenities include a day use area and campground operated by Alberta Parks. A playground, fire pits, cook shelters, and horseshoe pitches are all available. The Maples Day use area is just down the road, and offers a picnic shelter, fire pits, and a playground. You can also stroll down to the neighbouring Dunvegan Market Gardens for ice cream, food, shopping, and mini golf!

Warm your hands around a crackling campfire, sit back, relax and enjoy the privacy of your cozy campsite alongside the mighty Peace River! Dunvegan Provincial Park offers 65 powered sites with fire pits and picnic tables. Visitors will find firewood available, outdoor toilets, tap water and a sewage disposal area. This is a great spot to keep the entire family active with hiking/biking trails, fishing, canoeing and a playground. If you’re looking for something more relaxing – take a stroll down the scenic river side pathways to nearby Dunvegan Gardens for some shopping, mini golf and ice cream! Be sure to stop in at the Historic Dunvegan interpretive centre that is right next door. Explore the region’s history and take a guided tour of the historic buildings still standing in their original spots!

Photo opportunities abound in this beautiful area. This is a great spot to view Dunvegan bridge which is Alberta’s longest vehicle suspension bridge! The Maples Day Use area can be found a short hike up river and offers a beautiful spot for picnickers. The South side of the river has a boat launch for boaters wanting to explore the river. The park is open May 1st to October 15th.

Dunvegan Provincial Park is located 26km South of Fairview.

Begin a beautiful Peace country day at the Maples Day Use area!  Upon arriving at Historic Dunvegan simply turn right and proceed under the bridge to this beautiful river side area.  Originally an Anglican Mission stood at this site in the 1880’s.  Today visitors can enjoy picnicking, fishing, hiking or biking, a beautiful playground and exploring along the mighty Peace River.  Historic Dunvegan is near by and well worth a visit to explore the history of this fascinating region. Dunvegan Gardens is located close by and offers mini golf, shopping and ice cream!  Dunvegan Provincial Park is adjacent to Historic Dunvegan and offers overnight camping facilities.

The Maples Day Use area is 27km South of Fairview.

Canoes, kayaks and river boats can access the river from the well-maintained gravel boat launch found at Pratt’s Landing campsite. Located along the Peace River downstream from Carter’s Camp boat launch and upstream from Dunvegan bridge, this is a great spot to start a day’s exploration on the river or take a break from a river adventure and stop in for a rest and a picnic. Care to stay longer in this beautiful spot? Choose from one of 15 overnight camping sites equipped with fire pits and picnic tables. Non-potable water, outdoor toilet facilities and firewood is also available for visitors. Pratt’s Landing can be found 32km west of Fairview on highway 682.

Dunvegan’s boat launch can be found on the south side of the Peace River, road access begins on the west side of the Dunvegan bridge entrance. Parking can be found just above the boat launch area. This well-maintained gravel boat launch is situated on a narrow spot of the river where the water runs deep. Head down river to Shaftsbury and the Town of Peace River or up river to Pratt’s Landing and beyond. A great way to explore the Peace region and the river valley. Stay a few days and visit Historic Dunvegan, Dunvegan Provincial Park, The Maples Park and Dunvegan Market Gardens which are conveniently located along the shore line of the north side of the river. Located just 23 km east and 22 km south of Fairview along Highway 2, this scenic recreation area on the Peace River offers free camping, fresh water, hiking trails, a playground, and great fishing opportunities.

Please note: Access to the campground is via a steep dirt road, which can be challenging after rainfall.

Beautiful river views abound in the Peace Country and Pratt’s Landing is an excellent example seen here.  Located along the Peace River downstream from Carter’s Camp and upstream from Historic Dunvegan, this camping spot offers something for everyone!  Choose from one of 15 overnight camping sites equipped with fire pits and picnic tables.  Enjoy a day of horse shoes, fishing, hiking and exploring the river valley.  Canoes, kayaks and river boats can access the river from the well-maintained boat launch.  At the end of an amazing day, relax around a warming campfire and listen to the mighty Peace River flowing by.  Younger campers will enjoy the playground and the freedom of lots of space to run and play.  Wildlife can often be viewed in this area. There are day use areas as well as non-potable water, outdoor toilet facilities and firewood available for visitors.

Pratt’s Landing can be found 32km west of Fairview on highway 682.

The Sand Lake Natural Area is a hidden gem for year-round fun in the Peace Region. This 7,028 acre natural area is made up of boreal and dry mixed wood forest. The area includes sand dunes and is a mosaic of forested ridges and wetlands. Many diverse habitats make this area home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Visitors enjoy the many kilometres of trails by hiking, horse back riding and OHV riding. Visitors have lots of fun here all year round! Winter time is no exception as this area offers many kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails! This natural area can be found north west of the town of Fairview.

Dunvegan Market Gardens: A Fresh and Fun Destination in Northern Alberta

If you are looking for a place to enjoy nature, shop for local produce, and have some family fun, look no further than Dunvegan Market Gardens. Located only 26km south of the Town of Fairview and right next to Dunvegan Provincial Park just off Highway 2, this family-owned business has been serving the area since 1953. This beautifully landscaped location runs along the north shore of the mighty Peace River and is open spring through fall, offering locally made items, giftware and much more. Find a wide variety of bedding plants in the spring and later in the season bring the family and enjoy picking your own strawberries and raspberries. Through the summer, corn and other vegetables are also available fresh from the garden. As the long Peace country summer comes to an end, enjoy the beautiful fall colors of the river valley and find the perfect pumpkin here.  After shopping in the garden centre get some refreshments at the onsite licensed restaurant serving mouth watering, locally produced bison burgers and much more. Whether you’re looking for a short but memorable hike or a peaceful place to appreciate the region’s stunning scenery, the Dunvegan Overlook Trail provides an unforgettable experience.

Directions: As you enter the provincial park, stay right and drive under the Dunvegan bridge. There is a well marked parking lot 200 meters after the bridge. There are also washrooms at the parking lot. The trail starts as you walk north towards the bluff, the 1st 300 M are flat till you reach the bluff.
